(born Nov. 13, 1886, Hanover, Ger.died Sept. 18, 1973, West Berlin, W.Ger.) Pioneering German dancer. Wigman studied with É and Rudolf Laban and made her debut in 1914. Only a few years later she began a stellar career as an innovative choreographer. Her impact on dance throughout the West was immense. Her students included Hanya Holm, who exerted a major influence on the development of American modern dance, and thousands of other original choreographers.
